Respected Gallery Professional Takes on New Opportunity, Makes Nanaimo Home

Nanaimo Art Gallery is pleased to announce Carolyn Holmes has accepted the role of Executive Director. As the next Executive Director, Holmes will be responsible for providing direction and oversight in the development and delivery of the dynamic programs the Gallery delivers including exhibitions, education and outreach initiatives. Holmes is a collaborative leader who will develop, direct and oversee all the administrative and operational functions of the Gallery.

"I am thoroughly looking forward to joining the strong team at Nanaimo Art Gallery and connecting with the local and regional communities. This is a perfect time for embracing new challenges and opportunities and I am excited to give my all to the role of Executive Director."

Holmes most recently served as Executive Director at Two Rivers Gallery in Prince George, BC. During her tenure at Two Rivers, she developed the art education function and built a team that has been recognized nationally. Under her direction, Two Rivers Gallery created a substantial outreach program, a maker space, MakerLab Youth Immersion for vulnerable youth and a vibrant studio program – all of which are still running today with great success.

As a trained art museum professional, Holmes used her prolific skill and experience to implement the strategic goals at Two Rivers to reach and expand creative influence in the community and engage audiences. As a result, during Holmes leadership Two Rivers Gallery evolved into one of the leading cultural organizations in BC.

Holmes currently sits on the BC Museums Association Council, as Secretary, on the BCMA Education and Professional Development Committee, the BC Heritage Emergency Response Network and the Board of the Prince George Public Library. She is a member of the Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization, the Canadian Museums Association and the Cultural Services Advisory Council for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George. Most recently, Holmes chaired the provincial museum association conference in Prince George in October 2019.

Carolyn Holmes brings years of experience working in museums to the role, but more importantly brings a passion for engaging the public with contemporary art, artists and encouraging creativity. She is eager to learn about the Gallery, listen to the community and embrace the diversity in the region. Holmes will continue to build the strong reputation Nanaimo Art Gallery has earned and looks forward to collaborating with other local organizations to strengthen the community.

"Nanaimo Art Gallery is fortunate and excited to have Carolyn Holmes take on the Executive Director role. Building on the incredible work of our previous leadership, Holmes is the right person to progress the Gallery's vision and to continue the work of inspiring our community through art," says Debra Jacklin, Gallery Board President.

Holmes earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University in studio arts and a Masters of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto. After graduating, Holmes completed contracts in a number of art galleries across Ontario, including the Art Gallery of Ontario and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

When not applying her energies to the art museum world, Holmes can be found enjoying the outdoors, gardening or playing board games with her family. She can't wait to explore Vancouver Island!

Nanaimo Art Gallery is very pleased that Holmes will be joining their tight knit, highly functioning team starting on July 13.
