Ghosts and supernatural creatures play important roles in our stories, and our lives. They serve as forces of reflection, warning of dangers, and preparing us for difficult times. In Nanaimo, specters often show themselves through a different kind of haunting: collapsing mine shafts, massive clearcuts, and declining fish stocks. Through sculpture, drawing, painting, and video, artists featured in Haunting the Undermined Zone speak with phantoms, including those embedded in land, left behind by colonial resource extraction and environmental loss.
